Prof. Ilie selected by the International Space Science Institute (Bern, Switzerland) to lead an multi-disciplinary international team to investigate atmospheric loss of heavy elements on current and geological scales, involving processes starting from surface-air interactions, atmospheric chemistry, circulation patterns, ionization by solar radiation, and ionosphere-magnetosphere and solar wind interactions. HeRA graduate student Mei-Yun Lin has been awarded the 2021 NASA FINESST Fellowship. Mei-Yun will be studying the transport and energization of atmospheric molecular ions as they are overcoming the gravitation bound and escape to space.
